Elephant Village - Home for retired and rescued elephants from circuses, as well as old elephants.

India has many old, retired elephants. Some of whom are of no use to the tourism industry, since they have grown old or rescued from circuses and have no home. Most of these elephants are badly treated and given to ‘babaji’s’ in Rajasthan and Haryana who use the elephants to beg. Almost all of these elephants suffer from chronic foot rot, arthritis and acute de-hydration. Their life in the arid and desert region is torturous. The giant pachyderm finally collapses and dies an agonising death after 4 to 5 days.

In a country that has revered the elephant for 1000s of years, it would be a matter of shame if concrete steps are not taken to treat this largest animal on earth, with the dignity it deserves.

Therefore in June 2006, EMF has submitted a proposal to the Government to set up a home for old and destitute elephants and even injured elephants in Chattisgargh called ‘‘Elephant Village’.

Approval from the Government for the ‘Elephant Village’ is still pending.
